The Shadow of the Wind

I had such high hopes for this book. SUCH high hopes. I mean, get a load of this opening line: "A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept". So simple and concise, we are blind to how profound! And this: "A labyrinth of passageways and crammed bookshelves rose from base to pinnacle like a beehive, woven with tunnels, steps, platforms, and bridges that presaged an immense library of seemingly impossible geometry." Beautiful! This book was described as the book that all book lovers will love. But then I stumbled on the first sex scene and that was the end for me. It's one thing to say they slept together, it is another to describe it.
I often think to myself "If my kids picked this up off the shelf, would I want them to read it". When that scene came so early in the book, I knew the answer was no and I put it down. Sadly, it won't be living at my house any more.
