All The Light We Cannot See
August 01, 2016
I do not believe the rating system has been created that would allow me to truly express how highly I think of this book. I'm a sucker for some beautiful language, and this book has that on lock down, unequivocally. Vivid, magical, poetic and my new favorite book (I would say of all time, but that feels rather final...) 544 pages, I read the whole thing in one day. Couldn't put it down. Science, light, radio waves - it all has never been more magical or enthralling as Anthony Doerr made it seem. I've tried to read three other books since and have stopped reading them simply because they aren't this book. Gah, I just can't rave about it enough.
To begin with, they say don't judge a book by its cover, but obviously I do. That's what first drew me to this book, along with the rather poetic and intriguing title. But within 30 pages, I knew this book would be one I would read again and again. I had to physically restrain myself from highlighting every other sentence. Told from the parallel perspectives of two children on opposing sides of the second World War, we find that our lives are often connected to those we may never meet by invisible strands of light. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
p.s. Swore 4 times, I counted for you. There's one short section that I wish had been left out towards the end. But really, it is only a paragraph, nothing graphic, and I understand that its inclusion helped to illustrate some of the heinous and terrible things that happened during WWII.
